Wouldn’t it be great if you could get X-rayed or do a simple blood test that would indicate whether or not you are suffering from ADHD? Unfortunately, there is no quick test to establish a diagnosis. The process is a bit more complicated.
Generally, assessing ADHD involves a thorough interview. In the case of a child, both the child and the parents will describe the symptoms that the child is exhibiting. Parents will also be asked questions related to the child’s cognitive deficiencies and academic difficulties. Behavioral, emotional and social problems will also be addressed to rule out other disorders such as anxiety disorder, conduct disorder, Asperger’s, central auditory processing disorder or any other learning disabilities for children, and post traumatic stress disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder or learning disabilities for adults. Whenever any mental disorder is suspected, a more thorough investigation is required.
There are a number of rating scales such as the Connors Rating Scale to assess ADHD and establish the severity of symptoms. The Connors Rating Scale includes three separate tests: self rating, parent rating and in case of a child, also teacher rating.

Hi Virginia that's really awful! Hi Laura - my son (9 years old) was on Neurofeedback and it seems to have helped, but it was really expensive. I then came across the sharperbrain which was developed by the guy who runs this blog (Bob Gottfried). It has done wonders for him. He completed the program 4 months ago and so far his attention is significantly better, he is more organized and less hyperactive. I hope this helps.

There was only one questionnaire filled out by teacher & parent for my grandson. Dr looked at it and started prescribing for a 6 year old! He is no longer on meds - we changed his diet. I'm not saying everyone is wrongly diagnosed, but I have to wonder how many kids are on drugs that don't need to be.

Hello, I have been diagnosed with ADHD. Does anyone have any experience with using neurofeedback (it’s also called EEG biofeedback) for this condition? It's quite a costly program and I am not sure how effective it is. Any feedback would be appreciated. Great article by the way. Laura

Hello Jason, Psychiatrists typically do an interview and refer to the DSM IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). The methods described in my article are more thorough and can more accurately identify the nature and severity of the impairment.

Hello, I was diagnosed with ADHD after a 20 minute interview with a psychiatrist - none of the fancy stuff you mentioned in the article. Is the diagnosis still valid? Jason
